Well it’s officially Mouth Cancer Action Month. MCAW ribbon

The campaign, symbolised by a blue ribbon, commenced on 1 November.

Promoted by the British Dental Health Foundation and supported by Denplan, the first ever month-long campaign aims to raise awareness of a disease that claims one death every five hours.

With statistics from Cancer Research UK showing 5,325 new cases diagnosed in 2006, more than cervical and testicular cancers combined, the campaign message to the public is ‘if in doubt, get checked out!’

As evidence shows that early detection saves lives, increasing chances of survival to 90%, the BDHF is calling upon dental professionals to make a significant contribution by offering free screening checks, displaying the free campaign poster as well as discussing mouth cancer with patients.

Many Denplan members have taken up this mantle and are supporting the call by offering FREE mouth cancer screening checks for anyone who wants one. It’s not too late to get involved!

This year’s campaign poster, designed and produced by Denplan, features novelist Lia Mills, who tells of her experience with the disease and whose early symptoms were misdiagnosed by her dentist.

There are many ways you can join the campaign and raise awareness

 • Order your FREE campaign poster from the Denplan Press Office on 0845 6082800 or email pressoffice@denplan.co.uk stating number of posters and address details

Warning signs to look out for include ulcers that don’t heal within three weeks, red and white patches in the mouth and unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth. Those most at risk include drinkers, smokers and those who chew tobacco.
